Why rank is the bid, and nothing else

Every other ordering on the internet is a secret. This one is a number you can read, and the argument for that is simpler than it looks.

Ask any directory how it decided the order and you get one of three answers. It is an algorithm, which means nobody will tell you. It is editorial, which means somebody's taste, unnamed. Or it is affiliate revenue, which means it is for sale already, quietly, and the reader is the last to know.

This board gives the fourth answer: the order is what people paid. That is the whole rule, it is printed on the rules page, and it is the only thing that moves a position.

Why that is more honest than curation

An honest curator is possible. An honest curator at scale, whose incentives never drift, who never takes a call from a listing, and who publishes the reasoning behind every ordering decision, is not something anybody has managed for long.

Paying to rank is not a cleaner motive. It is a visible one. When a listing sits at the top, you know exactly why, and you know what it would cost to move it. Nothing about that requires trusting us.

What it is bad at

Rank says nothing about quality. A well funded product outranks a better one that nobody has heard of, and no amount of wording on this page changes that.

We could have hidden it. A board that ordered by money and implied it was ordering by merit would convert better. It would also be the thing this board exists to not be.

So the price is printed next to every row, the receipts are published, and what you do with that is yours.
