What a visit counter cannot know

Most analytics is built on recognising people. Take that away and you can still count almost everything worth counting.

Every dashboard you have seen is built on one trick: recognise the same browser twice. A cookie, a fingerprint, a login. From that one capability comes unique visitors, sessions, bounce rate, returning users, funnels, cohorts.

Take it away and the standard vocabulary collapses. That is not a failure of measurement. It is what those words always meant.

What is left

A great deal, as it turns out.

  • Pages opened. One counter, incremented. That is a real number.
  • Clicks sent out. One counter per listing.
  • What the arriving request said about itself. A browser, an operating

system, a referrer. Each one its own tally.

The last is where most sites quietly cross the line, by storing those together on one row. That row is a fingerprint whether it was meant as one or not: Firefox on Linux arriving from a small forum in a five minute window is often one person.

So here they are separate counters that only ever go up. Ten Firefox visits and ten Linux visits do not tell you there were ten people on Firefox running Linux, and that loss of resolution is deliberate.

What we will not print

  • Unique visitors. Requires recognising somebody twice.
  • Online now. Same.
  • Bounce rate. Requires knowing that two page views were the same person.

You will find none of them on the stats page, and any board that shows you all three while promising it does not track you is telling you one of those two things and not the other.
