A directory that does not pick winners

Curation is the standard answer for a directory and it fails in a specific, predictable way. Giving it up costs something real, and what you get back is checkable.

The usual way to build a directory is to have taste. Somebody reads the submissions, decides what belongs, arranges the good ones near the top and writes a paragraph explaining why. Done honestly it is genuinely useful, and several of the best privacy resources on the internet are exactly this.

This board does not do it, and the reason is not that curation is worthless.

How curation fails

Not through corruption. Through drift, and through scale.

A curator who starts with clean incentives acquires relationships. A project emails and asks why it was left out. A larger project offers something that is not money. The list grows past what one person can keep current, the older entries stop being rechecked, and the ordering becomes a record of when somebody had time rather than what is true.

None of that requires anybody to behave badly. It is what happens to any list that depends on continuous unpaid attention, and it is why so many carefully built directories are quietly three years out of date.

The deeper problem is that you cannot check any of it. Presented with a curated top three, you have no way to distinguish careful judgement from an old draft nobody revisited, because both look identical from the outside.

What replaces it here

The ordering is what each listing paid, and the amounts are printed.

That is a worse signal about quality, obviously. It is a far better signal about itself: you know exactly what produced this order, you know what it would cost to change it, and none of that requires trusting anybody's taste or diligence.

The board also gives up the thing curation is best at, which is telling you which one to pick. It does not attempt to. What it does instead is print the click counts next to the amounts, so you can see which listings people actually went to after seeing the same page you are seeing.

What we still do, and why it is not curation

Every listing gets read after it goes live. Not to decide whether it belongs, which was settled by the payment, but to attach facts that can be checked: whether the source is public, whether builds are reproducible, whether accounts are required, whether Monero is accepted, whether a warrant canary exists.

Each of those needs a link to somewhere a stranger can go and see it, each is stamped with the day it was looked at, and none of them moves a position. A fact with an address is a different object from an opinion with a rank attached.

The reason a pay-to-rank board can be believed about anything is that it never grades what it sells. The moment we could move a position for being good, every position would be suspect.

The part that is worse

Say it plainly: a well funded product outranks a better one nobody has heard of. That is the cost of this design and no wording changes it.

What we could have done is hide it. A board ordered by money that implied it was ordering by merit would convert better than this one does. It would also be precisely the thing this board exists to not be, which is why the amount is printed next to every single row.

Who this is actually for

Two people.

Somebody with something to sell who cannot buy advertising anywhere, at any price, because a payment processor has categorised them. They need a channel that is for sale at a published price and cannot be taken away by a policy update.

And somebody looking for that kind of product, who would rather see an ordering they understand than an ordering somebody swears is impartial. The first group pays for the board. The second is why the first group is here.
